LGBT+ Awareness Days In May

2nd May  International Family Equality Day

All over the world, more and more children are growing up in families where one or both of their parents identify as LGBTQ+. Yet, each of these “rainbow families” has very different lived equality experiences, often depending not only on what country they live in but what street they live on. In some countries, our families enjoy equal rights and social recognition but in far too many others both parents and their children face overt discrimination and have to live under a constant threat of violence.

17th May International Day Against Homphobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia
The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia was created in 2004 to draw the attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexuals, transgender, intersex people and all other people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics.
The date of May 17th was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.
The Day represents a major global annual landmark to draw the attention of decision makers, the media, the public, corporations, opinion leaders, local authorities, etc. to the alarming situation faced by people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics.

19 May  Agender Pride Day 2021
To be agender means to not identify as any particular gender. Agender is also called genderblank , genderfree, genderless, gendervoid, non-gendered, ungendered, or null gender. The agender identity falls under the nonbinary umbrella and (sometimes) the transgender umbrella.

22 May Harvey Milk Day 2021
Harvey Milk Day is organized by the Harvey Milk Foundation and celebrated each year on May 22 in memory of Harvey Milk, a gay rights activist assassinated in 1978. Harvey Milk was a prominent gay activist during the twentieth century. He ran for office three times before becoming the first openly gay person elected into California public office, where he acted as a city supervisor.

24 May Pansexual & Panromantic Visibility Day 2021
May 24 is Pansexual Visibility Day a day to celebrate and recognize those who identify as pansexual

Participate in research on LGBTQI+ migration

 Dear GPN (Gay Professional Network),

The IARS International Institute are asking for your support to improve the lives of LGBTQI+ migrants by promoting the Queer Migrants Project survey to LGBTQI+ migrants, asylum seekers and refugees, as their experiences and opinions need to be heard!

Our EU-funded Queer Migrants Project survey will explore the experiences of LGBTQI+ migrants on the journey to and life in the UK whilst considering the changes needed to improve this.

The aim of this research is to gain a greater understanding of LGBTQI+ migrants' experiences and opinions on a more integrated service for LGBTQI+ migrants. The survey is completely anonymous and only takes 10-15 minutes to complete.

The survey can be accessed here: https://forms.gle/DarhQzR9taN87bHq9

The key aim of the Queer Migrants project is to strengthen the capacity of professionals in answering the needs of LGBTQI+ refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers. This will be achieved through the objective of developing a sustainable training programme that will enlighten professionals on the challenges posed by the double stigma attached to this community.

Please help make a difference and support this research by passing this survey onto your contacts.

Thank you for your support.

Best wishes,

Maija Linnala
