Everyone should be free to live a safe and dignified life, have a family and make their contribution to society. The Other Foundation works to change the views, practices and institutions that prevent people - because of who they are or who they love - from being able to do that in southern Africa. We gather support for those who are working to advance equality and social inclusion of homosexual and bisexual women and men, as well as transgender and intersex people - and we give support in a smart way that helps groups to work better for lasting change.

Another Step Closer to Equality and Freedom for All The Other Foundation joins the world in celebrating and commemorating International Women's Day Photo by Jessica Felicio on Unsplash The Foundation thanks all of you who took the time and made the effort to share with us your ideas about the kind of projects that require funding so as to take our region another step closer to equality and freedom for all. A total of 340 applications were received from 14 countries, requesting approximately ZAR 39 million. Read more... Peer Review Workshop From 1 – 3 March 2021 a panel of 11 peer reviewers of grant applicants from 7 countries participated in the Peer Reviewers Workshop. The Foundation extends a heartfelt thank you to all these peer reviewers who have continued the tradition of the Foundation's participatory grant making practice, including one peer reviewer who isn't profiled because of security concerns in their home country. Read more... Safer Internet Day The Other Foundation joined the globe in marking and celebrating Safer Internet Day on 9 February 2021, with the theme of "Together for a better internet". Where the Money Goes Housing Hope for Queer People in Bulawayo Photo by:  Lina Trochez  on Unsplash The Voice of the Voiceless (VOVO) in Bulawayo has created a safe space for members of the queer community in the city, and stability for itself as an organization through the securing of an office property. The house, which is an office for the organization, is a disability inclusive walk-in centre that offers a wide range of services and activities including wellness and psycho-social support, capacity building, art, a resource centre, documentation and media, movement building and advocacy. Media: The Right Hand of Equality and Freedom Supportive and affirming coverage of the LGBTI community in the media is a crucial ingredient in creating progressive societies that are informed, sensitive to and inclusive of queer people. Now more than ever before, LGBTI individuals are organizing themselves with new groups being established in every country in our region. The ability of these groups to engage with the media will go a long way in increasing their visibility and promote advocacy for their recognition, inclusion and participation in society. Read more... Yesterday's Learning, Today's Action Findings from “The Untold Stories of the Closet”, a documentary by Health 4 Men in partnership with the Other Foundation that formed part of the grant project Khulula in 2018, surfaced many issues in the LGBTI community in eSwatini, such as social exclusion and homophobic discrimination in the family. Health 4 Men used these findings to inform its most recent reiteration of the project, Khulula 2, which sought to address these issues and their underlying causes. Read more...

Meet Our Team Michelle Adams Finance Manager Michelle joined our team from the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) where she was a management accountant. She previously worked as an accountant for several private companies. She completed her SAIPA professional evaluation examination to be certified as a professional accountant, after completing a Bachelor of Commerce degree in financial accounting at Stellenbosch University. Katlego Chibamba Grantmaking Officer Katlego is the founder of Gays and Lesbians of Rustenburg (GLOR). Most recently he worked as a project assistant for the HIV/AIDS curriculum integration project of the Higher Education AIDS initiative, at the University of South Africa (UNISA), in Pretoria. Katlego also produced and presented a radio show for the UNISA radio station, in addition to working as an assistant student counsellor.
