The European Parliament voted Wednesday to support an EU-wide ban on conversion therapy, backed by more than 1.2 million signatures gathered through the European Citizens Initiative framework. The measure passed with 405 votes in favor, and the European Commission is expected to formally respond by May 18. The vote builds on a growing body of EU action, seven member states, including France, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Malta, Cyprus, and Norway, have already banned the practice outright, with Germany and Greece having enacted partial bans. The move reflects a broader European consensus that conversion therapy is not only discredited but a violation of fundamental human rights.

The vote is the latest in a series of landmark LGBTQ+ rulings and resolutions from European institutions in recent months. The EU Court of Justice struck down Hungary's anti-LGBTQ propaganda law earlier this month. In March, the same court ruled that EU member states must allow transgender people to legally change their name and gender on identity documents. And in February, the European Parliament passed a resolution calling for the full recognition of trans women as women ahead of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. Taken together, it’s a stark contrast with the current direction of the U.S.
