Sector News

Last Call for LGBT Groups

Over the last 6 weeks we have been exploring LGBT Groups relationships with LGBT rights and the law through a survey and a series of round table deiscussions. The survey will be closing on Monday 5th Feburary so if you havent taken part on your groups behalf, now is the time to do it.

All LGBT groups, no matter how big or small or whether they have staff or volunteers, are invited to take part in the
survey which will help us to paint a picture of how LGBT groups engage (or don't engage) with the law and LGBT rights in their work - however informal it may be.

LGBT History Month 2018

LGBT History Month this year will be commemorating two sombre events; the 30th anniversary of the passing of Section 28, which prohibited local authorities from disseminating materials that ‘promoted homosexuality’ in schools; and the fortieth anniversary of the murder by shooting of Harvey Milk, the USA’s first out-gay elected councillor.
The History Month 2018 theme is ‘Geography: Mapping the World’.
Visit www.lgbthistorymonth.org.uk to find resrouces and events.

Put yourself on the Map!

LGBT History Month 2018 will focus on ‘Geography: Mapping the World’ which we thought fitted rather nicely with the mapping work we are carrying out in London.

This mapping project, Always Out There is funded by City Bridge Trust and is being delivered in partnership with HERO/GMFA. We aim to collate and create an interactive map of groups, support and services for LGBT people in London.

We are keen to make sure this work doesn’t just happen in London, so we are asking LGBT groups everywhere to put themselves on the map! So if your LGBT isnt already a Member of LGBT Consortium - join up here and be counted!

Changes to the teaching of Sex & Relationship Education and PSHE - consultation closes 13th February

The Department for Education is considering how to update the existing Sex and Relationship guidance which, was last updated in 2000, and is therefore now out of date.

The updated guidance will support schools in delivering the new subjects of Relationships Education at primary and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) at secondary.

There is a survey which asks for your views on a number of topics that will be considered in the update and we would encourage as many LGBT groups to give their views as possible.

Consortium Team News

Paul - Chief Executive Officer

Welcome to February and welcome to LGBT History Month. At a time when the diversity of our communities appears under attack, we are looking forward to using this month to highlight the magnificent work every Bisexual, Trans, LGBT BAME, Faith, Disability and beyond Member organisation undertakes on a daily basis.

Without your hard work and dedication we would be in a far darker place so here’s to celebrating how we are a collectively powerful force, not just in February but throughout every day of the year. Thank you to all our Members for the dedication to supporting LGBT communities.

Your Engagement Team

2018 has been a whirlwind so far and the Engagement team have covered a lot of Member miles between them!

During 2018 the team plan to have more opportunities for you to get together with other Members, more resources and more training than ever before for our Members to take advantage of.

We will be in touch with all of our Members over the next few months to allocate a dedicated Engagement Officer as your point of contact, so that it will be easier than ever for you to access all the benefits that Membership with Consortium has to offer.

If you feel a bit in the dark about Membership Benefits you can find more information
here or drop one of our Engagement Team a line!

Our Trans Organisations Network (TON) is continuing its pilot of a secure online platform for TON Members to share and connect, which will be launched officially later this month. If you're a TON Member and you would like to put yourself forward to help with the testing process, then please contact
Shaan with your details.

Sophie - National LGBT Anti-Bullying Project Coordinator

We are excited to be hosting a visit from this projects funder, The Government Equality Office, who will be coming along to see one of our delivery partners in action this month.

Our partners are getting great feedback from the work they are deliving to teachers and school staff around preventing and tackling homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying;

''A warm yet professional tone was immediately established by the course leader which allowed insightful discussion to take place across both training sessions. I feel that me and my staff were fortunate to have taken part.''

''The facilitator was excellent. Not too rigidly set to their own agenda and able to facilitate an open discussion around difficult issues that would have been difficult to manage without them.''

Needs Assessment project in Barking and Dagenham From ELOP and the LGBT Consortium.

Dear LGBT Consortium Member

We are currently working with ELOP who are carrying out a Needs Assessment project in Barking and Dagenham. I know that you don’t operate directly in Barking and Dagenham but I wondered if you might be able to share the following information and link with any relevant service users, networks or members please?

The Needs Assessment project, funded by Barking and Dagenham Council, aims to collect a range of information about the experiences of LGBT+ people who live, work and study in the Borough.
A community survey has been created which is designed to enable everyone to share their experiences, to form a picture of life in Barking and Dagenham and to help influence how local services are designed to meet the needs of LGBT+ people.

The full link is http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/4053868/Barking-DagenhamLGBTCommunitySurvey, the link contains more information about the survey and what will happen to the information people provide. The survey closes on the 2nd February.

If you can help disseminate, that would be greatly appreciated by all.
Thanks in advance.
All the best
Vicky

European Court Advises EU Countries To Recognise Same-Sex Marriages
by Tim Gibson
A senior advisor to the European Court of Justice has said that married same-sex couples should receive the same freedom of movement benefits as their straight counterparts. Marriage equality is still a contentious issue among many EU member states, with countries like Italy, Greece and Slovenia and a dozen others yet to budge on legalising. Belgian advocate general Melchior Wathelet gave his opinion after hearing the case of Romanian Adrian Oman and his American partner Claibourn Robert Hamilton who were married in Belgium in 2010. Despite their legal marriage in an EU state Romania is refusing to recognise them as a couple and grant residency rights for Hamilton.

GPN with Lady C on Tuesday at the Savile Club

Join your Network on the 23rd January at the exclusive Savile Club in Mayfair.

We are a group of Gay Professionals who like their comfort, good wine and food, comfortable surrounding and great people.

Lady Colin CampbellLady Colin Campbell has graciously accepted to be our guest of honour on this occasion.

The Savile Club was established in 1868 by a group of the most distinguished writers and artists of the time. Its home is a fine 18th Century house in the heart of Mayfair, whose air of elegant exclusivity reflects the uniquely creative ambiance which is preserved in the Savile Club of today.

Dress code (for Members and Guests)
The Club has no formal dress code, other than a rather undefined rule of not offending other members, so although for example jeans and trainers are not permitted and a jacket is required (except in very hot weather when a notice will be posted on the board), a tie is not de rigueur.
It reflects of course on the price since we  pay for room hire and more expensive wines and include canapés.

The choice (this may change pending new menus in 2018) is

White Burgundy: Macon-Uchizy and Bordeaux: Chateau Beauregard-Ducourt.

Canapés:

 Selection of Crostini:
Oven dried cherry tomatoes and feta cheese, mustard dressing
            Parma Ham and horseradish cream
Smoked Salmon, crème fraiche and dill
Marinated artichoke hearts with olive pesto
Tiger Prawns on a stick with dipping sauce
                       Mozzarella, Tomato and Basil kebab
                       Chicken Satay
                       Honey & Mustard Sausages
                       Smoked Haddock Welsh Rarebit
                       Salmon Fishcakes, Lemon Mayonnaise
                       Anchovy Sticks and remoulade sauce

The price is £49.50 and includes a small fee towards the running of GPN.
GPN is a non for profit membership organisation operating since 2010. The excess from the membership fees after food, drinks and room hire pays for the website, promotion, organising, stationary including the badges, transport & banners, guests and guest speakers.

Members who have already paid for the year, there is no further charges except that we now will meet bimonthly and up to five times a year.

By hiring private rooms, we can talk and make the occasional presentation without the noise associated with cheaper venues.

As we did over the last few years, drinks will be included, (up  to a point though!).

I am also delighted to extend another exclusive invitation to the Whitefriars Club, of which I am the Honorary Secretary, at the Palace of Westminster to Celebrate its 150th Anniversary on Thursday 22nd February. Although not exclusively Gay, I can assure you of a few LGBT tables... details and RSVP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/whitefriars-club-150th-anniversary-at-the-palace-of-westminster-tickets-35239904503
